big hair don't care!

I looove Leela James' hair, it's so HUGE...whether it's all hers or not, it looks fab!

& I love Solange's afro too, I'm starting to see more women with fros nowadays...new trend alert? Well, it's nice to see more women sporting the hair that grows from their scalp, unaltered. #teamnaturalhair!

My Not-to-Do List

Thought I’d write a quick Not-to-Do list inspired by Tim Ferriss after reading his book ‘The 4-Hour Work Week’. So my not to dos are…

…check Facebook more than once a month.

I remember when I first discovered the wonders of e-stalking, I was on facebook religiously! FB consumed my time and almost made me flop my exams! I began being so caught up in knowing what other people were up to and doing with their life, what a loser I was lol. I’d take a heap load of pictures at events/social meet ups to the point where I was no longer at the event to really connect with the people but rather to just say I was there and post up the pictures that very evening I got home. Don’t get me wrong, despite having a strong urge to infinitely de-activate my FB account, I still appreciate the main aspect of FB which is to stay in touch with people both new and old, who you wouldn’t necessarily call up or meet up with. It’s always nice to get that friend request or inbox message from a back, back, back in the day friend you thought you’d never see or hear from again or finding out that the new ‘friend’ you made has the most unlikely candidates as mutual friends. Plus, it’s great for promo – though I’d prefer NOT to be at the receiving end of all the nuisance club promos! So yeah, my e-stalking days are long gone, I decided to get a life!

…get pre-birthday age depression.

It was my 24th birthday on the 25th of Jan. I'm mostly inspired by people notably older than me, so at the age of 24, the word ‘old’ is the complete opposite of how I’d label myself. Despite feeling (and luckily for me, looking) as young as ever, it didn’t stop the numerous people who tried to inflict age depression onto me! I soon realised that the age depressed folks were the ones who put an age to every life plan e.g. ‘be engaged by the age of 25, then married a year later, then have first kid by the age of 28 but before I even get married, I have to be in a relationship for at least two years first!’ Putting age to plans virtually out of your sole control like getting married and having kids can be so disheartening when you still haven’t even found a long term relationship when your ‘age plan’ suggests that you should be approaching you’re one year wedding anniversary by now. I don’t do the whole age thing any more, because having age targets on ideal situations out of your control makes us forget that contrary to the conventional wisdom that ‘life is short’, life is actually the longest thing we know! New age should not be met with pessimism, instead, be grateful you lived to see another year; with the number of young people I hear are dying these days, each year added to my life is an absolute blessing.

…limit social life to the weekend.

It’s sad when a 9-5 job becomes your life…well unless you skip to work everyday because your doing something you absolutely love. However, for most people caught in the Rat Race, they hate having to work for money yet their 9-5 job has consumed them. I am starting to break the habit of telling myself that I’m too tired after work to do social things, as an attempt to save myself from being one of many 9-5ers who live only for the weekends. I refuse to dedicate 5 out of 7 days of my life working hard for someone else rather than working hard on me.

…idolise people.

The arrival of Onika Maraj in London a few months back caused total chaos; it was pure Minaj Mayhem! Hands up, I love me some Nicki Minaj BUT only to the extent of being able to recite her lyrics! So hearing that girls were crying hysterically and even fainting…jeeze get a grip girls!

Back in my early teenage years, when I used to read Word Up! Magazines, B2K were the ish! I remember when B2K came down to London, me and my school friends found ourselves outside TV studios, radio studios, shopping hotspots, likely hotels and stopping every limousine we saw just in case it was them inside. We went crazy over four guys who bleed blue just like me & you; I look at them now and think, ‘Really J-Boog?! In high school you were the man homie, what happened to you!’ So though I totally understood the hype, for it brought back memories of the days I was B2K & Usher obsessed, it still disturbs me at how celebrity obsessed we are as a people. Reality is, all these celebrities are all human beings just like me and you. I think it’s important to be inspired by others to become better in ourselves but let’s not forget how to distinguish the difference between having life inspiring role models/heroes and human ‘idols’. Idolise no man.

…underestimate myself and overestimate others. Say no more.

Bye, Good Night!

Every morning, without fail, my twitter timeline is GUARANTEED to be littered with tweets that read, 'Hello, Good Morning!' Those tweets annoy the frick out of me, just stop tweople!

I like the song though, despite my dislike for Diddy's vocals and that random chick in the Dirty Money group that kinda looks like Dawn but not quite. As for Dawn, she just keeps looking better the more I see her; I think I've found the latest addition to my girl crush list! She's too cute:)

Ok, I want to keep my girl crush list short & sweet so I think I need to start being more selective from now on!

Va$htie (naturally pretty), Eva Marcille (too cute!), Esperanza Spalding (I'd make my 10-year old brother wifey her if only he was older!), Solange (because she's just real, very relatable), Beyonce (sick performer and actually appears to be a very humble woman), Zoe Saldana (just recently made the cut!), Rihanna (ever so slightly lost interest in her but her style game is still on point so I'll keep her on the list), Cassie (talent aside, she's too gorgeous!), Meagan Good (I just wish she didn't wear the same clothes all the time- she's defo a serial repeat offender!), Amber Rose (I'm slightly off her because she just doesn't do anything but any chick who can rock a bald head is dope!) and Nicki Minaj....

...I do love me some Nicki! In her defence from all the Lil' Kim jacking claims, I will just say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking elements from people/things that inspire you as long as it's TRUE to who you are. When you stay true to who you are, the elements you 'swagga-jacked' become believable and convincing because you make it your own, just ask Beyonce!

Ok, that's all the randomness I wanted to rant about before I hit the sheets; so bye, good night! ...and fingers crossed I won't wake up to 'hello, good morning' tweets!

Hmmm...

'Vogue US has been around for 118 years;
and has published 1,416 covers...
Only 14 of these covers feature black women.'

14 out of 1416? Really? Hmmm.

Anywho! Why am I seeing and hearing more of Grace Jones lately? Has she come to put Lady Gaga in her place?? After all, she is definitely the original Gaga...and her weirdness is authentic, unlike Sophie's Lady Gaga's. I can't even lie though, she used to scare the frick out of me when I was a kid:s I love this illustrated pic of her; her arse looks fab! lol

Beyonce released a vid to a song that I have already rinsed out! Favourite line: 'I got beauty, I got class; I got style and I got ass!' Like the video too; it's not great but I really like the theme.

Oh and I can't mention Beyonce without saying something about Rihanna, so...have you seen Riri's moonwalk?! Haha, she so had to be joking! lol

Is 40 something the new 30 something or something?! I find it weird when I see 40 somethings still stripping for men's mags. There's nothing wrong with being sexy, but when you reach a certain age, I just feel that you should be sexy in a more classy manner. These women are more or less the same age as my mother and lawd knows I'd be embarassed if my mum was looking like a pornstar! Before I get called a hater...they look absolutely great for their age! I guess these ladies are just trying to get back into the limelight again, so I won't knock their hustle. They'd give a lot of 30 & even 20 somethings a run for their money! (Phew, I think I got myself out of trouble...)

Apparantly Lisa Raye, and Stacey Dash are not getting along?

Drake should keep the singing to an absolute minimum at all times coz I don't rate! Saying that, I do quite like the video for Find Your Love ...but someone please translate for me what those Jamaican dudes were mumbling! I doubt Drake understood himself lol.

I love me some Robin Thicke! He's voice is so smooth...unlike he's dancing! Have you seen this dude's dance moves?!? Hahahahahaaaaaa, absolutely atrocious! lol. Watch the performance of him & Nicki Minaj...oh laaaaawd!

Anyways, I like this song!

M.I.A.'s video for Born Free was a lot of things boi! Almost left me teary eyed; I can't watch sad clips lol. I remember when I watched The Color Purple, boy did I crrrrrrrrry...I'm such a nerd! But defo a big shout to Romain Gavras for this one, I rate him for this.

M.I.A, Born Free from ROMAIN-GAVRAS on Vimeo.

...and why haven't I still seen Poetic Justice yet?!? Thank goodness I'm finally watching it this weekend

Last but defo not least, R.I.P. Lena Horne.

Ok, enough randomness, back to shoes...

Peace of Mind

My mind has been clustered with provoked thoughts and anxiety lately; I've been re-evaluating my outtake on life...and as a result, I've fallen deeper in love with the art of writing. Writing is my form of release and escapism; I don't have to keep my thoughts caged and feelings locked up. Thus writing can be very liberating for me. I used to write for my eyes only but now I realise that there's nothing more rewarding than the feeling I get knowing my words touched someone. I know we all go through times when we want to find peace of mind and writing is definitely one source where I find mine...where do find yours?

Peace of mind is not the absence of conflict from life, but the ability to cope with it. -I like:)

Great song:)

Hahahahahahaaaa...Ghetto or what!

She scares me now! I thought all this 'liking girls' she raps about was a stunt...oh laawwwd!!

It's Barbie B*tch!

The Church Hug

Ok, so basically...

I've been told by many guys that when I hug them....I don't really hug them! Haha, I didn't even realise I was giving guys the 'church hug' until one of my guy friends pointed it out to me a few years back. This is how you can identify a church hug:

  • just one arm is used
  • body is positioned at a 90 degrees angle rather than 180 degrees (i.e. perpendicular rather than parallel)
  • there's curve in the back so that you look like siamese twins only joined from the shoulders up
  • arse cocked out 'til it's looking like Nicki Minaj's (is it even real?!? coz that sure ain't no 'itty bitty piggy'...):

I'm not one to get paro but I've had a fair share of guys hug me in an inappropriate manner. I'm talking rubbing my back, feeling my bra strap, pushing my chest way too close against theirs...I've been violated too many times!!!

Personally, I absolutely love hugs; as the giver and receiver. A hug, to me, consists of four major components:

1. Closeness - how close do you get?

2. Tightness- how tightly do you hold onto the person?

3. Time- how long does the hug last for?

4. Release- who ends it first?

Depending on what 'type of love' you have for the person you're exchanging the hug with, the amount you decide to use of each component sends out a particular message...one intended or maybe not intended.

nicki minaj

Am I making a big deal out of a hug? ...Yeah probably!

If you see me hug a guy with one arm, an arch in my back, and my arse cocked waaaay out, then you know what time it is- it's the church hug!

Road to Riches...don't forget to take pictures

On the road to the riches, don't forget to stop to take pictures
Cause life ain't about where you finish, but what you've learned along the way
So as you chase success remember that I told you best
You look fine, then you'll find
You're already there
-Usher

This is my song of the week!

Coz I'm That Chick!

Electrik Red consist of four fiesty ladies who, quite frankly, aren't really what you call 'singers'...but I still love them! In fact, I actually really liked their first album 'How To Be A Lady: Volume 1', which was produced by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, so I hope they come harder this year. Here's a preview of their new tune 'I'm That Chick'; can't wait to see more of these ladies!

Sometimes, I Cry

I Cry by Tupac

Someone who listens to you and makes you feel worthy is an amazing person to have around and makes me want to be that sort of person even more. No matter how many friends you have, or associates or whatever you want to call them, you will always find that you’re real friends are only a few. When you do realise who your true friends are, make sure you treasure them because one day, you might really need that person to be there when you’re in despair.
True friends, I know who you are.

P.S. Tupac was a sick poet, make sure you check out some of his poems- beautiful.
