"You can't hate the roots of a tree without hating the tree; you can't hate your origin without hating yourself" - Malcom X
I remember a while back, like a good 6 years ago, my Caribbean friend at the time said to me, ‘you have really nice hair; why is your hair so nice?’ With a confused face I just shrugged, ‘I don’t know, all the girls in my family have nice hair so I guess it’s in my genes’, then she had the nerve to say, ‘…but you’re African!’ *pause* What did this girl just say to me?! Yeah, I pulled the same face you probably just did! But I didn’t go crazy on her, I understood that she spoke out of ignorance and from a mind programmed to perceive everything African in a negative light. It did really get to me though, and it frustrated me knowing that generations of people shared her mentality. Anyways, no one could ever say something like that to me now and get away with it, I would fly kick ‘em! I love everything African, it was the only way I could love myself properly.
Here are two Malcom X speeches that I really love; a lot more people should hear it.
“However, our society thinks that success means having a car and a lot of money and looking as white as you can or as American as you can. Or if you’re white, looking as exotic as you can. We don’t have any idea that it’s about our hearts and our souls and how we treat the next person.”
My mind has been clustered with provoked thoughts and anxiety lately; I've been re-evaluating my outtake on life...and as a result, I've fallen deeper in love with the art of writing. Writing is my form of release and escapism; I don't have to keep my thoughts caged and feelings locked up. Thus writing can be very liberating for me. I used to write for my eyes only but now I realise that there's nothing more rewarding than the feeling I get knowing my words touched someone. I know we all go through times when we want to find peace of mind and writing is definitely one source where I find mine...where do find yours?
“Peace of mind is not the absence of conflict from life, but the ability to cope with it.”-I like:)
There isa time for everything, And a season for every activity under Heaven: A time to be born and a timeto die, A time to plant and a time to uproot, A time to kill and a time to heal, A time to tear down and a time to build, A time to weep and a time to laugh, A time to mourn and a time to dance, A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, A time to embrace and a time to refrain, A time to search and a time to give up, A time to keep and a time to throw away, A time to tear and a time to mend, A time to be silent and a time to speak, A time to love and a time to hate, A time for war and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-22
Right now I think it's time for me tolet go...and let God
I say that I refuse to settle for less because I claim that I am worth and deserveso muchmore…then someone shows me more than I could imagine and I want less…?!? I guess it’s true what they say about women not knowing what they want, ay? Or maybe, I don’t really know my worth.
“Be very careful if you make a woman cry because God counts her tears. Every tear a woman sheds is equivalent to a man's sacrifices in life. The woman came from a man's rib, not his feet to be stepped on, not on his head to be superior but on his side to be equal, under his arm to be protected and near his heart to be loved.”
